8500 sqmGranjo is transforming a ruined former textile factory in Porto into a student residence and flat programme in keeping with the architectural heritage of the site. The authorities wanted to preserve the building in line with the industrial character of the existing building. Granjo was custom-built for the operator Odalys, and the result is a student residence with 211 rooms and 16 separate flats, totalling 1,238 m² of living space.
Designed by the Lisbon-based architectural firm Fragmentos, the operation consists of retaining certain structures such as the typical chimneys and the general shape of the buildings. The buildings also benefit from a significant improvement in energy performance to achieve an EPB level A.
The programme is a success: one of the 3 best rehabilitations in the service building category by Prémios Construir '22. The building was sold to the Xior Group, one of the leading European players in the management and ownership of student residences.
